Manatee County Florida includes Anna Maria Island which is a narrow, 7 mile long barrier island off the coast. I live just across the Cortez Bridge less than a mile’s walk to AMI within the historic, working fishing village of Cortez. This area is very popular with snow birds and tourists from all over the world. The regular county buses go on and off the island and travel all over the rest of the county which includes Bradenton and Palmetto. Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) bus fares are very reasonable and are my main means of transportation because I haven’t owned anything but a bicycle for almost ten years. But one of the best benefits around are the free trolleys that MCAT operates 365 days a year on Anna Maria Island. Yes I said free! It is one of the ways that the 3 cities on Anna Maria Island deal with traffic congestion and parking issues. I often walk over the Cortez Bridge and catch one of the 3 free trolleys to go to the beach, to go to the public library and to go shopping. At the end of my day, I catch the regular MCAT bus for a cheap and quick ride home with a full backpack and several cloth bags filled with my purchases. I am happily living the green life in Manatee County Florida thanks , in part, to public transportation!
